An Overview of Labiaplasty - Labial Reduction Surgery

Atlanta Urogynecology Associates
Alpharetta, GA

The labial reduction surgical procedure reduces uneven or enlarged labia minora without leaving any visible scars. Labial reduction surgery results in a sleeker, thinner appearance of the labia, which is typically more comfortable and appealing in size and shape to the woman.

Dr Moore and Miklos do not just amputate or cut off the enlarged labia through labial reduction surgery, they actually contour, reshape and reduce the size of the labia, without creating a scar on the outer edges (which can result in more discomfort) and leave the labia with their natural pigmentation and a more youthful appearance. In most cases after healing, the labial reduction surgery is undetectable.

Most patients can expect some bruising and mild discomfort following the procedure of labial reduction. Ice packs are utilized after labial reduction surgery to help minimize swelling and discomfort and mild analgesics are also used. If swelling or bruising occurs, it usually is resolved after a week or two. The final optimal results can usually be appreciated several months after labial reduction surgery.

Most patients can return to work or school within a day or two after labial reduction surgery, however strenuous physical activity is discouraged and patients are to refrain from sexual intercourse for 6 weeks after labial reduction surgery.

Many patients travel in from out of town/state to have the labial reduction procedure completed and just make one trip. Our office and labial reduction surgical facilities are set up for this and are conveniently located near several hotels. A consultation and physical exam is completed in the office the day prior to the labial reduction surgery procedure and then most patients stay in the local area for one or two days after labial reduction surgery prior to traveling home.

The labial reduction surgical procedure can also be completed in conjunction or at the same time as other procedures if necessary, such as vaginal rejuvenation surgery (repairing vaginal relaxation that may occur after child-birth), urinary incontinence procedures, perineoplasty (repair of a relaxed perineal body or restoring the normal tone of the opening of the vagina) laparoscopic reconstructive or prolapse procedures or even vaginal hysterectomy.

Dr. Moore and Dr. Miklos are fellowship trained Reconstructive Vaginal and Pelvic Surgeons. This means that they trained for several years in advanced reconstructive surgical techniques after their residency to become specialists in this field. Their practice is dedicated to restoring the normal function and anatomy of the pelvic floor and vagina. They are considered experts in the field of minimally invasive Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, this means that they treat patients with the most severe forms of vaginal prolapse, including patients that have had multiple failed surgeries in the past.

They are considered pioneers in this field as well, having been some of the first to study and utilize graft materials to help reconstruct vaginas and decrease failure rates. Patients are sent from all over the United States by other gynecologists, urologists and other surgeons to Dr. Miklos and Moore. Surgeons travel in from all over the country and the world from places such as Italy, India, Russia, Chile, and France to learn their surgical techniques.

Therefore, it only makes sense that you would want surgeons with their expertise and training to perform this type of sensitive surgery on the labia and vagina. Many other surgeons claim expertise in this type of surgery, however their expertise may just be a weekend course, and not years of formal training. Just as General Plastic Surgeons are the experts on breast reconstructive procedures or facelifts or tummy tucks (they typically have no training in vaginal surgery), fellowship trained Urogynecologists such as Dr Miklos and Moore are considered the experts in vaginal reconstructive surgery.

As with any surgery there are risks and the potential for complications. The most common risks are the same risks seen in most surgery and include bleeding, infection and scarring. Patients are given antibiotics prior to the procedure of labial reduction, which results in a very low risk of infection. In most cases of labial reduction surgery, if an infection occurs post-operatively, it is minimal in nature and taken care of with a short course of oral antibiotics.

Bleeding is also a rare risk in labial reduction surgery, however can occur with any surgery or could occur post-operatively if strenuous activity or intercourse is begun to early. Problems with healing such as incision seperation, under or overcorrection, scarring and/or pain following the procedure of labial reduction surgery, are also rare risks, however can occur as with any vaginal surgery and may require further surgery or revision.

The risk of any of these problems is less than 1% and is also decreased when experienced and competent surgeons are performing the procedures of labial labial reduction.

Success Rates of Labial Reduction Surgery

Dr. Moore and Dr. Miklos have excellent success and satisfaction rates with their patients that undergo labial reduction. Most women have a resolution of the symptoms that they may have been suffering from such as discomfort in tighter fitting clothes and/or pain with intercourse and are also very pleased with and feel more positive about their appearance after labial reduction surgery.

Drs. Miklos & Moore have written a book of vaginal rejuvenation which was published and released in 2006. This book is the most comprehesive resource on vaginal rejuvenation in print and readily available to the public.
More about the book Vaginal Rejuvenation by Dr. Miklos and Dr. Moore.

John Miklos, MD, FACOG, FACS, FICS is an internationally recognized expert in Laparoscopic, Urogynecologic, and Aesthetics Reconstructive Vaginal Surgery.

Dr. Miklos is the only physician in the USA who specializes in Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery who has earned the prestigious "American Top Doctor Award" by Castle Connelly.

Dr. Miklos is the first fellowship-trained Urogynecologist/Laparoscopic surgeon to receive subspecialty training in Aesthetic Vaginal Reconstructive Surgery. This unique melding of multiple fellowships and training has made Dr. Miklos one of the most sought after surgeons in the world for reconstructive vaginal surgery.

Dr. Miklos is a graduate of Medical University of South Carolina where he received his Master of Science degree in 1985, followed by his Medical degree 1989. He then completed his traditional four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia Pa in 1993. He then completed a two year fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Vaginal Surgery in Cincinnati Ohio.

In 1995 after the completion of his fellowship, he was named the Director of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Vaginal Surgery at Atlanta Medical Center. Despite being named an authority in his field that year Dr. Miklos chose to pursue further interests and further develop his understanding of minimally invasive surgery and female pelvic anatomy.

In 1996, Dr. Miklos left Atlanta Medical Center to study under internationally renowned laparoscopic surgeon William B. Saye, MD (now retired) and world renowned pelvic anatomist/surgeon A. Cullen Richardson, MD (now deceased).

Dr. Miklos spent 2 years with this all-star team taking his training to an unprecedented new level among his peers. Dr. Miklos is the first gynecologist to train in both of these two fellowships: Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (2 years) and (academically unrecognized) Laparoscopic Reconstructive Surgery (2 years). In 1997, Dr. Miklos founded the Atlanta Center for Laparoscopic Urogynecology.

Dr. Miklos remains the Director of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Atlanta Center for Laparoscopic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery. He is also the Director of Atlanta Medical Research Institute. He continues to pursue excellence in his field by searching world wide for new, innovative and/or unique surgical and non surgical techniques.

This commitment to research and development makes Atlanta Center for Urogynecology one of the busiest centers for teaching and research and surgery in the country. He was one of the first in the country to perform many of the laparoscopic vaginal surgery procedures including: sacral colpopexy, paravaginal, Burch, enterocele, vesicovaginal fistula, sciatic hernia repairs as well as one of the first surgeons to do the TVT sling (1998), TOT sling (2002), laser vaginal rejuvenation (2003) and the new mini incision sling Secure (2006).

The pursuit of a better quality of life for his patients has also lead him to investigate, research, study and then employ surgical techniques for a much desired and requested line of therapy known as Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery, also known as Vaginal Rejuvenation.

Dr. Miklos was the first Urogynecologist in the country to train with Dr. David Matlock (2002) in the discipline of Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation. This surgical training has allowed Dr. Miklos and Moore to round out their discipline of vaginal reconstructive surgery and offer all modalities of therapy for patients with various expectations and requests.

Dr. Miklos has more training in various types of reconstructive vaginal surgery than just about anybody in the world. He has written more than 150 scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters. He and Dr Moore are co-authors of the new book Vaginal Rejuvenation.
