WAGA of Atlanta recently reported on the Zerona laser, a new FDA approved laser used to break down fat cells which the lymphatic system then evacuates from the body. It is a painless experience for the patient with no need for recovery time nor anesthesia of any sort.

According to Dr. Shelly Friedman of Scottsdale, AZ, the machine was at one time used to prep liposuction patients. It was a way to liquefy the fat before going in and suctioning with the traditional cannula. Someone decided to try the machine without the liposuction and found that the fat can be drained out by the lymphatic system. Patients have been found to lose inches in the treated areas, one patient losing 3 pounds and 7 inches from her waistline.

The doctor does say that the patient must drink lots of water after treatment to ensure proper evacuation of fat. Also, patients must come in for a total of 6 sessions over the course of 2 weeks, and can come back for another 2 week session. The doctor cautions though, if you don't exercise and eat an unhealthy diet, the fat will return.
